GRRG Travel Team vs Ft. Wayne Bomb Squad
Sat, June 30, 2007 - The Plex, Ft. Wayne, IN
The Grand Raggidy Roller Girls met up with Ft. Wayne on The Bomb Squad’s home turf, and skated away in victory after a hard-fought match.
The first period was point-for-point while the two leagues sized each other up. This was the first time they had met on the track. In the final minutes of the period GRRG started pulling ahead, taking a 32-16 lead as the period ended.
Both teams were lucky that GRRG Penalty Mistress, Havanna Riot, wasn’t on hand for the proceedings. She would have been very busy dishing out discipline for all the bad things the girls were doing. This match saw a record number of penalties with a total of over 200 Minors and 15 Majors. There weren’t a lot of open spots in the penalty box, so there was a lot of 3-on-3 and 3-on-4 action for the rest of the game.
Grand Raggidy took a hard hit in the second period, falling 19 points behind as The Bomb Squad scored an incredible 51 points to Grand Raggidy’s 16. The Bomb Squad was riding an explosive momentum, and it looked like things might be over for Grand Raggidy. The period ended with a commanding 67-49 lead by The Bomb Squad.
The Third Period was another story. Ft. Wayne played a hard game, but it just wasn’t enough to meet the challenge that GRRG had brought.
With Donna Darko & Mira Maheiney already out on injuries, things started to look even worse when key blocker/jammer Missi LeJavelin was ejected from the game for three Major Penalties. The Bomb Squad remained in the lead throughout the final period, but Grand Raggidy kept tightening the gap.
With only three minutes left on the clock, and GRRG still behind, Jackie Daniels tightened up the score with a fantastic assist from Lindsey Blowhan, bringing the score to 82-81. Grand Raggidy still needed to score two more points in the final jam for a win.
Make Ya Dizzy Lizzy answered to the call, and was whipped into the game-winning goals by Blowhan just as the clock ended. This was definitely one of the most exciting finishes in Women’s Roller Derby history. Final score, 82-84, Grand Raggidy.
